Vik Muniz, Pictures of Magazine 2: After Breakfast, After Elin Danielson Gambogi
2012
Vik Muniz recreates iconic and historically significant paintings by using hundreds of images torn from glossy magazines to compose collages. In this work, he reimagined a painting made in 1900 by Finnish female painter Elin Danielson-Gambogi. When his collage of overlapping and optically rich images is complete, Muniz photographs the collage and prints a large-scale image that becomes the new work of art. Lit from a single source, the artwork looks deceptively three-dimensional.
