Erwin Wurm, Fat Car
2001
Made of metallic paint, Styrofoam, and polyester, Fat Car's puffed-up form represents the playful way Erwin Wur manipulates volume. The resulting car is chubby and shiny, its clunky and overweight shape the antithesis of the sleek line of a classic, speedy sports car. Fat Car thus throws a humorous punch at popular culture, the social and economic values given to consumer obsessions, and the relationship between money, power, and the body.
