Phillip K. Smith III, Lucid Stead: Element #4
2015
Phillip K. Smith III remodeled an abandoned 70-year-old homesteader cabin in Joshua Tree, California to include mirrored panels and colored LED lights. This artwork reconfigures the pure elements of the cabin: the desert-worn wood (from the original structure), color shifting mirror, and white light. Building upon the concepts of the California Light and Space Movement, Smith confronts the ideas of modernist design, while pushing the boundaries of objects, manipulating forms, textures, materiality, and light.
