Developed in New York as part of Arman’s signature practice of accumulations, the watercolor paint tubes in Evolution are organized into a grid encased within a polyester cube. The paint has been squeezed out of the tubes to form the series of abstract shapes of pure color suspended in clear resin. The work is simultaneously a commentary on the materiality of paint and the commercial conditions that structure how artists secure those materials.
