Gormley’s artworks explore the emotional register of bodies. Through combining certain poses and materials, his sculptures suggest different time periods and states of being. In this work, the human outline, curled up in the fetal position, is constructed from bites taken out of luncheon white bread slices. The figure appears to be that of an adult, and consequently its childlike pose evokes a strange juxtaposition between infancy and adulthood.
