Gary Hume, American Tan III (Bronze)

2006‑2007

One of the Young British Artists to emerge in the 1990s, Hume twists the clichés of Americana—the tan cheerleader—into this slick, eye-catching, and absurdist sculpture. The disembodied limb-like form is strangely acrobatic and rendered in a sickly sweet color combination. The glittery pompon sits atop a strangely jointed foundation that is neither arm nor leg, and the aggressive glossiness of the painted bronze is akin to the smooth perfection of a mannequin limb.
