Günther Uecker, Light Disc
1960
Light Disc is an example of Uecker’s application of nails to flat planes of wood in differing shapes and sizes. Slight variations in the patterns of the nails together with differences in the direction of light striking the objects create divergent effects of shadow and reflected light. Fashioned from mundane materials, these objects are sophisticated investigations of energy and optics and the way that light can seemingly dissolve solid matter.
