Luis Flores, Ambivalence
2015
Luis Flores uses repetition and uniformity to subtly challenge heteronormative masculinity. In the basic uniform of his sculptures—a normie outfit of navy-blue shirt, ironed jeans, and black Vans—Flores presents a caricature of himself that is soft and endearing, like an oversized stuffed animal. To achieve this effect, he adopts crochet as his primary craft and uses his own likeness as his main physical and conceptual tool.
