Sarah Sze, Random Walk Drawing (Grey Landscape)

2012

Although at first glance this work appears to be an unrelated jumble of discarded and distressed objects, it is a tightly focused and lyrical investigation into the representational and physical experience of landscape. For example, the rolled photographic print of the sky signals the genre’s basic elements of earth and sky divided by the horizon, symbolized in the yellow level, while the three-legged stool and paint-smeared jacket point to the artist in the landscape.
